St Leonard’s Redevelopment

Over the past few years we have worked hard to redevelop our building so that it is a flexible welcoming space to serve the community of Streatham.

Between 2018 & Jan 2022 we have managed to :

  • Replace the South and East End Roof.
  • Install new toilets, kitchen and servery.
  • Repair a structural threat to the north side of the church.
  • Create a play room and counselling room.
  • Replace our chairs.
  • Renew our lighting.
  • Renew our sound system.
  • Replace our boilers.
  • Replaced damaging polycarbonate covers on our windows, with breathable grills.
  • Completed restoration work on our stained glass windows.
  • Redecorate the main body of the church.
  • Create disability access to the chancel.

Below is a backwards time line, telling our story and thanking our funders along the way…..

December 2021

Once we had completed the work to the roof we managed one further push to redecorate the church interior which had been badly effected by water ingress and damp from the leaking roof. We were looking resplendent by Christmas !

May 2021

Following a very successful fundraising effort from the congregation, supporters in the local community, Viridor Environmental Credits and Garfield Weston, we were able to complete the schedule of repairs to the roof identified in our 2016 quinquennial inspection.

April 2021

In April 2021, with a grant from Heritage England, we replaced the remaining polycarbonate covers on our windows with grills. We also completed necessary repairs to the stained glass at the east end of the church.

November 2020 – A Thank You to our Funders

May 2019

During the first half of 2018 a worrying crack appeared in the North Porch that was in urgent need of repair.

We were delighted to receive the support of a generous grant from Viridor Environmental Credits of £80K towards this vital repair . The Heritage Lottery Fund have also agreed to supporting the project as a part of our Phase 1 Contingency.

Work commenced in the Spring 2019. This involved underpinning the North Porch via an internal dig and placing a secure brace within the structure. The staircase was removed and into the stair void two new community rooms are being built, one a meeting room and the second a creche. This greatly enhances our community facilities, further enhancing the flexibility of our building. A new staircase was bought into the church directly from the gallery. This also made access to the gallery much simpler.

Lighting and Sound

We are delighted that both our sound and lighting systems have been renewed during this period of Redevelopment. Both projects were funded by a generous legacy given by the late Ruth Bradbury, a member of the St Leonard’s church community for many years before her retirement to Cornwall. Thank you Ruth!
